Position Summary

The Librarian at NYU Madrid manages the site’s library as a central academic resource supporting teaching and research across the Academic Center. This role focuses on collection development, student and faculty support, and research guidance, ensuring that the library functions as an accessible, well-curated, and responsive environment for inquiry. The Librarian works closely with faculty, students, and staff to align library resources with curricular needs and to foster effective research practices within a global, multilingual academic setting.


This position is full-time and reports to the Senior Program Coordinator in the division of Academics, with a dotted line to the Director of NYU Madrid.

 

Principal Accountabilities


Library Management and Collection Development (25%)

  • Oversee the development, organization, and maintenance of the library’s collection.
  • Manage the acquisition of new materials, evaluating and responding to requests from faculty and students to ensure that holdings support the evolving curriculum and research priorities.
  • Maintain familiarity with library systems and platforms (e.g., Mandarin M5 Library Automation) to ensure efficient cataloging, access, and circulation.

Student and Faculty Support (25%)

  • Provide day-to-day support to students and faculty using the library.
  • Offer individualized research guidance to students, including those working on advanced or independent projects.
  • Serve as a key academic resource within the center, helping users navigate both on-site and NYU-wide research tools and databases.

Faculty Outreach and Instructional Support (25%)

  • Develop and lead workshops for faculty and students on research methods, library resources, and tools that support teaching and scholarship. These may be tailored to specific courses or offered as general sessions, delivered in person or via Zoom.
  • Maintain regular communication with faculty to ensure that library services are responsive to course needs and pedagogical goals.

Communications and Reporting (10%)

  • Produce periodic updates and reports for faculty and library users on new resources, services, and developments.
  • Ensure clear and consistent communication about library holdings, tools, and access.

Intern Supervision (10%)

  • Participate in the selection, training, and supervision of a library intern, supporting their professional development and ensuring effective contribution to library operations.

Budget Coordination and Reporting (5%)

  • Coordinate with the administrative team on budget planning, tracking, and reporting related to library acquisitions and operations.

Qualifications

Required Education

  • BA, BS, or equivalent, preferably in Library Sciences
  • MA or equivalent in the humanities or social sciences, preferred

Required Experience

  • Experience in library management, including familiarity with library systems and platforms, including Mandarin M5 Library Automation
  • Experience supporting academic research and working with students

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural, multilingual academic environment
  • Demonstrated cultural fluency and sensitivity in engaging a diverse community of students and colleagues
  • Fluency in English and Spanish (written and spoken)
  • Proficiency with standard office software (Microsoft Office, Google Workspace) and familiarity with learning management systems and research tools
  • Strong collaborative skills and the ability to work as part of a team
  • Legal authorization to work in Spain at the time of application

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with U.S. university students in a study abroad context
  • Teaching or classroom experience, particularly with US-based undergraduate students
