The position of Residential Life Coordinator (RLC) for First Year students is a full-time role within the Student Life team who works directly with the Residential Life Coordinator (RLC) for Upperclass students and reports to the Residence Life Manager. The RLC for First Year students ensures the high-quality delivery of residential support services and learning experiences that enable diverse First Year cohorts to build community, foster belonging, and develop leadership skills in relational intelligence, intercultural competence, communication, and conflict resolution. By cultivating these skills and fostering a supportive residential environment, the SRLC plays a critical role in enhancing student success, well‑being, and retention, helping students establish a strong foundation for their academic journey.
The RLC for First Year students will work with the Residence Life Manager and the RLC for Upperclass students to supervise the Residence Life support team and oversee their areas of responsibility, including any associated student leadership roles. They will co-develop events and activities, including signature residential experiences, and manage the housing assignment process, check-in and check-out, housing orientations, and any other residential life processes across several residence halls, with a focus on First Year students. The RLC will also enforce compliance with University policies and procedures.
The RLC will work at NYU London’s Academic Center and across all residence halls as needed. The position requires a strong service orientation while performing all duties. The RLC is required to maintain flexible working hours and participate in the professional staff duty rotation by performing on‑call responsibilities, ensuring continuous support and coverage for all students.
Residential Learning Experiences & Community Building: 25%
- Co-develop and implement residential learning experiences that build leadership skills in areas such as relational intelligence, intercultural intelligence and communication as well as conflict resolution.
- Organize and facilitate social events and activities to promote a sense of community and a strong sense of belonging among residents.
- Develop and implement activities that support First Year students’ transition to University life and to other NYU locations after their time at NYU London.
- Maintain and leverage relationships within the larger Student Life Department, with Academic Affairs staff, and relevant colleagues from within the NYU global network to ensure meaningful integration of residential life experiences with other dimensions of the NYU program.
Supervision: 20%
- Provide leadership and direction for Residential Life support functions, including student leaders, with a focus on the First Year experience.
- Supervise the work of the Residence Life staff, and their priorities, with particular focus on First Year initiatives, as directed by the Residence Life Manager (RLM).
- Support the RLM in the recruitment, selection, and evaluation process for Residential Life staff and residence-based student leadership roles.
- Provide on-going training for Residential Life staff and residence-based student leadership roles, with a particular focus on the First Year experience.
Student Support and Welfare: 10%
- Provide pastoral care and support to students, addressing their personal, relational, social, cultural needs, with particular attention to the transition of First Year students to university life and their next NYU location.
- Respond to the on-call duty phone as a member of the departmental rota. Lead urgency response while on call; collaborate with managers and senior leaders to respond to emergencies while on call.
- Refer students to appropriate university resources and services when necessary (incl. counseling, academic support, and accessibility services).
- Identify and report any student issues or concerns, following established safety and wellbeing protocols.
- Organise mediation support for residents who are struggling to live together and share space successfully. Equip residence hall staff to provide mediation support to students when needed.
Safety and Security: 5%
- Maintain a safe and secure living environment by enforcing university policies and procedures across residence halls.
- Respond to emergencies and escalating situations, ensuring the safety and well-being of residents.
- Collaborate with Campus Safety, Facilities staff, and other Student Life staff to implement proactive safety education and awareness within NYU London’s residences, with particular focus on First Year residential spaces.
Deputise for Residence Life Manager: 5%
- Deputise for the RLM and lead the Residence Life department in their absence, in coordination with the RLC for Upperclass students as needed.
- Provide oversight and guidance to Residence Life staff, ensuring continuity of operations and an excellent standard of care.
- Represent the department in meetings and decision-making processes, maintaining a focus on the needs of First Year students.
- Serve as back-up for the RLC for Upperclass students.
Administrative Tasks: 30%
- Assist with the planning and coordinate delivery of check-in/check-out processes, room assignments, and other administrative tasks as needed and assigned by the RLM.
- Coordinate the thorough, timely and accurate completion of reports and other administrative tasks per departmental standard operating procedures.
- Support the Residence Life Manager in monitoring and administering resident occupancy, team office management operations and general office procedures.
- Oversee the completion of Residential Living Agreements across all residences, and ensure initial (BASE or equivalent) meetings are conducted with every First Year student shortly after arrival.
- Maintain regular office hours across NYU London locations.
- Assist with the design and implementation of residence hall, area and departmental assessment initiatives.
- Contribute to the management of relevant Residential Life budgets.
- Provide effective and inclusive communications to staff, other areas of the University administration, and residents. Liaise with the communications function across the larger Student Life team as needed.
- Regularly check and update student intranet and webpages relating to Residential Life.
- Visit buildings to investigate and resolve complaints. Report maintenance issues and assist with health and safety inspections.
Other Duties: 5%
This position serves as a critical team member in the Student Life department as a whole. As such, a general attitude of a team approach to the work is critical. Duties not described above may be assigned to meet business need.
- Provide support to other teams within the Student Life department during high performance and peak periods of the semester, such as orientations, student arrivals, key events, or student departures.
- Provide cover for reception front desk as needed.
- Complete other duties as assigned by the Student Life Managers, Associate Dean of Students, or Deputy Site Director.
- Work non-traditional hours, including evenings, weekends, and bank holidays, as required.
- Be available and on-call to provide support during urgent situations or emergencies, ensuring the safety and well-being of residents and staff.
