Principal Duties
General Overview
The successful candidate will establish and manage the NYU Mumbai site, which is being developed to foster a conducive learning and research environment for students, faculty, visiting scholars and the local community and industry partners.
Education: Our primary goal is to develop the site for various educational programs:
- Study Away Programs: Offering semester-long programs for undergraduate and graduate students across disciplines, integrating academic coursework with industry opportunities and cultural immersion experiences.
- Workshops and Short-Term Certificate Programs: Conducting specialized workshops and short-term certificate courses tailored to industry needs, enhancing professional skills and knowledge, both locally and for NYU students and alums.
- Executive Education: Providing customized executive education programs catering to corporate professionals, combining academic rigor with practical insights.
- Modular Graduate Programs: Exploring the possibility of offering modular graduate degree programs, allowing students to pursue flexible, interdisciplinary studies.
Research: NYU India will serve as a hub for research collaboration and fieldwork opportunities:
- Facilitating Faculty Research: Enabling faculty members to conduct research, their own and in collaboration with local institutions and experts, focusing on diverse academic disciplines and interdisciplinary studies that are well-suited for Mumbai and for India.
- Research Collaboration: Encouraging partnerships with Indian universities and research centers to undertake joint research projects, fostering cross-cultural and global research initiatives.
Public Engagement: The study away site will actively engage with the public through various forums and events:
- Faculty Talks and Workshops: Hosting talks, seminars, and workshops delivered by our faculty members, sharing expertise and fostering intellectual discourse.
- Alumni Events: Organizing alumni reunions, networking events, and professional development opportunities, maintaining lifelong connections and support.
- Conferences and Symposia: Hosting academic conferences, symposia, and forums, attracting scholars, practitioners, and policymakers locally and from around the world.
Strategic Partnerships: To ensure the success and sustainability of the study away site, we will establish strategic partnerships with Indian universities, industry partners, governmental bodies, and cultural institutions. These partnerships will facilitate collaborative initiatives in education, research, and community engagement, enriching the overall academic experience and impact.
Establishing NYU India represents a strategic initiative to expand our global engagement and educational offerings, stimulate research collaboration, and foster meaningful public engagement. By leveraging India's resources and cultural diversity, we aim to create a vibrant hub for learning, innovation, and cross-cultural exchange. This initiative aligns with our institution's commitment to academic excellence, global citizenship, and preparing students for success in an interconnected world.
Academics (35%)
Study Away Programs: Offering semester-long programs for undergraduate and graduate students across disciplines, integrating academic coursework with industry opportunities and cultural immersion experiences.
- With support from relevant NY based offices and a strong NYU Mumbai team, who will be responsible for the day-to-day academics, ensure adherence with the regulatory educational and compliance environment including academic facilities are well maintained, meeting the needs of the various activities, and are compliant.
- Collaborate with faculty in NY/AD/SH and OGP colleagues on curricular strategies (course offerings, course development, oversight and review of syllabi, faculty hiring and performance review, course evaluations, pedagogical support, etc.).
- Ensure quality academic, co-curricular, internship, and research experiences for students. Collaborate with colleagues to develop inclusive course-based, academically focused public programming and co-curricular academic programs.
- Collaborate with faculty in NY/AD/SH and OGP colleagues to ensure there are adequate and updated resources for NYU Mumbai faculty to support teaching.
- Coordinate the development of an annual academic calendar with OGP, planning when and where specific courses will be offered.
- Utilize academic strategies to recruit, orient, develop, maintain and evaluate performance of faculty for the delivery of academic courses and programs that assist in transforming the intellectual life of NYU Mumbai as a central focus of NYU’s scholarly community.
- Ensure lecturers follow NYU academic policies and timely review of student work, grade reporting, etc. Assist with building the curriculum and stimulating enrollments related to the offerings. Maintain relationships. Liaise between local faculty and the academic departments of degree-granting campuses.
- Utilize information received from course and program evaluations to strategize on enhancements to the academic program, including addressing faculty and staff performance.
- It is anticipated that this position will remain appropriately academically active throughout their appointment in this role. This can include teaching classes, conducting research and/or writing for scholarly publications within their field of study.

Developing Strategic Partnerships:

Internships and experiential learning:
- In collaboration with NYU Wasserman Center, and OGP, provide oversight of the internship program at NYU Mumbai. This includes the development of a strategy to cultivate and maintain relationships and connections in Mumbai with contacts across relevant industries to develop internship and experiential learning opportunities for students.
- Work with NYU colleagues to assess potential partners for collaborative programs or other opportunities for relevant engagement.
- Oversee the assignment of student internships and manage disputes.
General (25%)
- Strategic Planning and Policy Setting: Plan, create, review and implement policies, procedures, and strategic planning for NYU’s presence in Mumbai to align with NYU policies.
- Leadership: Lead NYU Mumbai. Inspire an inclusive focused agenda. Manage staff. Supervise the day-to-day operations of the site to ensure an orderly, secure, and policy-compliant environment for students, staff, lecturers, scholars, and visitors.
- Professional Development and Programming: Oversee the implementation of a diverse offering of courses, programs, and public events in support of the NYU Tulsa mission. This may include hosting alumni activities, faculty receptions etc. Identify appropriate service providers in the delivery of curricular, co-curricular programs, alumnae, and local community engagement programming.
- Crisis Management: Oversee NYU Mumbai’s response to crisis coordinating with OGP leadership, NYU services, and local authorities as appropriate.
- People Management: intercede with challenging students, faculty and staff issues arise before becoming performance related concerns.
Site Operations (15%)
- Operations: Ensure the successful day-to-day running of general on-site and residential operations.
- Legal and Compliance: Oversee legal and compliance issues affecting the site, liaise closely with OGP, the Office of General Counsel and other compliance units at NYU.
- Space Management: Manage NYU’s physical presence in Mumbai.
- Technology: Oversee the site’s IT policy and other forms of technology and communication, in coordination with colleagues in NYU ITS.
- Vendor Relationship: Oversee the site’s relationship with outsourced providers such as security and cleaning services, in partnership with relevant units at NYU.
- Community Relations: Develop and maintain relations with various local authorities and professionals and alert OGP regarding changes in laws or developments likely to affect students, faculty, employees and facilities.
- Budget Management: Produce annual budget proposals that align with future strategic planning; manage site operations within approved budgets.
- Financial Operations: Oversee the day-to-day financial operations of the site; approve submissions of financial expenses; review financial reports and correct discrepancies, liaise closely with colleagues in OGP, including contract approvals and monitoring.
- Human Resources: Implement staff and faculty performance feedback. Supervise staff, including appraisal and time management, lecturers and other service providers. Coordinate with University HR, Legal Counsel OGP on employee relations matters. Ensure staff and faculty have necessary resources to perform their duties. Maintain a safe work environment where the community can flourish. Approve all staff and lecturer hiring in close collaboration with OGP and relevant NYU units.
Student Life and Housing (10%)
- Supervise the delivery of a comprehensive student life and housing program in accordance with established practices at NYU.
- Provide oversight in all respects, including local immersion, engagement, safety, health, wellness, and disciplinary matters.
- Develop and execute quality orientation programming; implement processes to respond to student concerns and emergencies; ensure student discipline policies are being implemented effectively.
- Ensure coordination on housing policy development and anticipate needs.
- Ensure an adequate and appropriate crisis response is in place for emergencies 24/7.
- Be available in case of an emergency.
- Develop local policies and practices that align with NYU’s University-wide policies and practices while respecting and navigating the local cultural and legal landscape.
Position Qualifications
Required Education
- Master’s degree required; terminal degree preferred.
Required Experience
10 years of related experience, preferably in an American higher education institution.
The preferred candidate must have strong administrative and managerial skills, as well as experience and expertise in leading people and programs in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, and/or civic engagement.
We strongly prefer a candidate with:
- Local Mumbai/India experience, knowledge, and connections;
- Relevant academic and/or research background;
- Understanding of and commitment to immersive and experientially-focused learning;
- Experience in community and industry engagement;
- Experience managing an educational program at the university level;
- Excellent record of working with faculty and researchers, teaching, and advising students.
This is a full-time executive position requiring full-time residency in Mumbai, India.

- Program Development: Have prior experience in the development and implementation of new programs including having worked in a grant or external funded environment,
