We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as the AMPATH Ghana Program Manager. The organization Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH) Ghana is one partnership within AMPATH Global, a network of universities and academic health centers that collaborate with public sector health systems to ensure essential and equitable health for all people. AMPATH originated with AMPATH Kenya over 30 years ago as a partnership between medical schools at Indiana University in the U.S. and Moi University in Kenya. The AMPATH Consortium has developed and inspired future leaders in healthcare in both North America and Africa, and produced hundreds of published articles all while successfully responding to healthcare needs in homes, communities, and clinical facilities in western Kenya.
NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Section for Global Health leads the AMPATH Consortium of academic health centers in the AMPATH Ghana partnership with the University for Development Studies School of Medicine (UDS-SoM), Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), and other affiliated institutions in Ghana. AMPATH Ghana leverages the experience of AMPATH Kenya, builds on the strengths of Ghana's existing healthcare system, and serves as a resource to Ghana's health and education leaders. This partnership works towards mutually beneficial outcomes for all partners improving the health and well-being of people in communities in and around Tamale, Ghana; educating tomorrows medical experts worldwide; and jointly researching breakthroughs that will inform improvements in population health around the world.
AMPATH Ghana seeks a creative thinker, strategic teammate, and administrative aide to assure the success of the program. Drawing from strong organizational and administrative skills, this person will perform and manage a variety of functions including project management, internal and external communications, management support of special projects or initiatives, and program metrics and measurements. This position is responsible for managing project activities including developing and tracking budgets, tracking timelines, deliverables, milestones, and providing periodic evaluations and reports for projects that range from small to large in scope. Acts as the functional lead for internal projects and initiatives. The candidate will provide vision, leadership, and technical guidance for AMPATH Ghana, and will be responsible for the health and growth of the program, as well as development of the staff.
The AMPATH Ghana Program Manager will be expected to:
1. Coordinate and support on multi-sectoral / health assessments, support fundraising, assist with recruitment and procurement.
2. Mentor and build capacity for health, academic and administrative staff
3. Ensure compliance with the award regulations and monitoring of health/research/academic/technical projects.
4. Coordinate with thematic areas, external health agencies and regulatory bodies to ensure assessment findings are documented and that all assessments include a specific analysis relevant to the programme area
5. Liaise with the Executive Field Director and relevant subject matter experts to develop project plans and budgets, contributing towards an overall AMPATH Ghana programme plan and master budget.
6. Oversee project implementation to ensure timely delivery of project activities, including monitoring against log frames, as well as individual performance management work plans.
7. Populate the financial and banking system to ensure that expenses are accounted for.
8. Develop and maintain cost and statistical databases
9. Coordinate with programs, schools, departments etc to account and bill the cost associated with their programs
10. Ensure compliances with financial and legal requirements
11. Support the Executive Field Director by liaising with key stakeholders to prepare timely programme and donor reports on project activities in compliance with AMPATH Ghana requirements and any relevant external donor requirements.
12. Support the Executive Field Director to identify technical staffing needs for emergency programmes, and support rapid recruitment, orientation and training of new staff.
13. Support the Executive Field Director identify programme supplies needs and coordinate with the logistics team to put in place a sensible phased procurement plan, and support the logistics team
14. Oversee and supervise all AMPATH Ghana-related staff to ensure they perform effectively and provide the required support services, as per the direction of the Executive Field Director
15. Other relevant duties as requested by the Executive Field Director of AMPATH Ghana
Qualifications and Experience
1. A research Master Degree in Health, with 8-10 years relevant experience managing health programmes
2. Significant experience working on health care projects
3. Health professional with postgraduate qualification in public health or equivalent field experience
4. Previous experience of health project/programme management
5. Experience and commitment to working with communities’ and ensuring health service delivery accountability
6. Knowledge of monitoring and evaluation
7. Experience of training and capacity building staff
8. Knowledge of institutional donors and experience of developing proposals
9. Ability to write clear and well-argued assessment and project reports
10.Excellent communication skills especially with external stakeholders such as local authorities.
11.Politically and culturally sensitive with qualities of patience, tact and diplomacy
the capacity and willingness to be extremely flexible and accommodating in difficult and insecure working circumstances.
